With the relaunch of the Baitrunner series through the Shimano Baitrunner D Spinning Reels, substantial improvements were introduced. Drawing from the knowledge acquired in spinning reel technology over the past five years, Shimano enhanced the Baitrunner's castability, minimized wind knots, and optimized the overall fishing experience, particularly when using braided lines. The drag system was upgraded, and the handles were redesigned with more comfortable grips. Collectively, these enhancements result in a markedly improved reel compared to its predecessor. If you're in search of a live bait reel, the Shimano Baitrunner D Spinning Reels are sure to meet your expectations. I still own Baitrunner 4500. Original, not even "B" modification, and it is still my workhorse. 20 years! That is when I was need to buy a new reel, I was very skeptical/cautious going from model to model... But this new "D" already made it's reputation, I did not worry much... And guess what? I was right! This reel has incredibly good from day 1. Casting: above my expectations. Line winding: much better than any big reel I ever had. Drags are good (meet high expectations). Weight is OK. Ongoing test - durability. My son's 4000D is still good after ~10 years, so my expectations are high!
This reel has it all! Reverse lock and unlock, freespool drag setting for bait fishing (back knob) and large reel handle knob. I have other shimanos that have lasted well over 30 years with good maintenance. Very Smooth action.
Shocked by Peen's performance compared to Shimono.
I have used Shimono since I was in high school and always considered it to be the gold standard at it's price point. An I was always willing to pay $100 or so more for what I felt was a superior r eel until now. To my susprise I had also ordered a Peen live feeder in a comporable size which was 75.00 less than the Shimono. After a days worth of casting and reeling, I came to the comclusion that they were tied in performance for my taste. (Now I'm sure some will dispute my findings) But I could not justify the cost increase without the performance increase. So I sent two Shimonos back and purchased two Penn's.
The bait-runner feature is hands-down the best way to free line a natural bait, live or frozen, for a spinning outfit. I see folks loosening and tightening their spinning drag to get the same effect, often losing the strike. Worth every penny.
Nice improvements to this already excellent saltwater reel
Excellent reel for both light tackle inshore & can handle the bigger stuff offfshore. The new handle is a plus...much more comfortable & gives you a better feel when hauling in bigger fish.
This reel was the last Shimano model on my bucket list. Couldn't be more satisfied . ,highly recommend it for strength, durability and smoothness of cast. SHIMANO, "YOU ROCK" Ralph Byron
Just got back from fishing for Monster Blues and Trophy Striped Bass, This reel was unbelievable! We caught over a dozen Bluefish up to 16 pounds and one 32 pound Striped bass measuring over 44 inches. This is one of the best reels in my collection and it performed like some of more expensive reels out in the market today.
This was the 5th Shimano Baitrunner 6000D that I have bought for surf fishing. The light bait runner drag keeps a large shark from snatching your pole out the sand spike until you can engage the second drag to fight the fish or break it off.
